INORDINATE AFFECTION

Colossians 3:1-17 (5) – Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (KJV)

Inordinate affection is an unsound and obsessive attachment to a person or thing, which manifests through uncontrollable love. This term is uncommon in the dictionary, but God uses it to highlight the excessive passion we might have for anything or people that we give priority to before Him. Apostle Paul in our Bible reading admonished us to put to death those sinful acts, including inordinate affection.

Excessive love for perishable things is a terrible sin but often overlooked because people count it as a way of life (Proverbs 14:12). Remember that Exodus 20:3 says: You shall have no other gods before Me. There is only one God (1 Corinthians 8:6), and the path to Him is Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). Whatever or whoever takes His place in our heart is an idol. For example, some believers now reverence their pastors than Christ and respect musicians than their creator, perhaps because He is not of physical presence (John 4:23-24).

People idolise material possessions like money, spouse, children, jewellery, sex, football, and properties, among other things. All these shall vanish, expect your righteous deeds (Matthew 24:35). Moreover, the Lord will never share His glory with anything (Isaiah 42:8). Whatever you place value on than your maker lures you into danger and sin against God. Therefore, the remedy to inordinate affection is to put everything about you under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. Check yourself and rid out any secret gods in your life or passion for the world.
