2 Kings 2:1-18 (6) – Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on. (NIV)
Apart from our spiritual and marital bond, another sensitive relationship we ought to pay attention to is ‘Mentorship’ (The mentee and mentor interrelation). A mentee is trained and counselled by a mentor, who is an experienced and trusted adviser.
Since the early days, mentorship had existed. For example, in the Old Testament, Moses mentored Joshua; likewise, Naomi did to Ruth while Elizabeth helped Mary, Paul equipped Timothy as Priscilla and Aquila guided Apollos (Acts 18:24-28), among others, in the New Testament. However, the peculiarity about these relationships is ‘loyalty and respect’—the mentees believed, remained humble and committed to their deserving masters as seen in our text where Elisha stood firm with Elijah, till the end!
Beloved, whether in our marriage, career, business or calling, we all need a coach apart from the spiritual instructor (Holy Spirit), to ensure that we stay focused (discipline) and equipped on the path of purpose and destiny. And so, if you are yet to identify a mentor, you should pray for one. When you find him/her, maintain a steady union with them and learn from their lifestyle. Oh! Don’t be like Judas or Gehazi who got cursed due to disloyalty to their mentors (Matthew 27 & 2 Kings 5:20-27, respectively).
Finally, are you already a mentor? If yes! Come what may; stay your course to guide/guard and empower your mentee just as Elijah gave the double portion anointing to Elisha!
