Revelation 21:1-27 (8) – “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (NLT)

The second death is the eternal damnation that happens to every sinner after the natural death (or rapture). This final death was first mentioned in the letter to the church at Smyrna (Revelation 2:11).

The phrase ‘Second Death’ was again, cited in Revelation 20:6, 12-15 where John equates it to the ‘Lake of Fire’ (the ultimate judgement of the wicked and those whose names were not found in the Book of Life). Finally, the ‘Second Death’ appears in the verse used as our key text. There, we see various classifications of unrepentant sinners who will end up in the lake of burning sulfur. However, on the contrary, those who overcome the world and whose names were written in the Book of Life, will not take part in the ‘Second Death’— which means that ‘Overcoming’ is vital to escaping this terrible event (Zephaniah 1:14-18).

Beloved, are you certainly living the life of an overcomer? Do you still tell lies, fornicate, backbite, gossip and steal, among other things? Remember! Christ has given us everything that pertains to righteousness and victory over sin and death (2 Peter 1:3-11). Therefore, irrespective of your dirty past, if you repent, confess Jesus as your Lord and key into the knowledge of Him (Romans 10:9-11), He’ll blot out your sins!

Hymn: Softly and Tenderly, Jesus Is Calling – Will L. Thompson (1880)

1. Lord Jesus! I don’t want to die the ‘Second Death’. I acknowledge that I’m a sinner or backslider; please forgive my sins (confess), and give me a new life.
