Proverbs 18:24 – One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (NIV)
I watched a video where a man entertained a crowd by attaching long sticks to his feet and walked. This continued for a while, and the spectators would cheer him on. However, in a jiffy, the man lost his balance and crash-landed. Umm, like the speed of light! Those who applauded him vanished while he languished in pain.
That moment, the Holy Spirit began to liken the clip to reality. In that, when all are rosy, and the going is smooth, you make friends (people want to identify with your success), but when the chips are down, family and followers disappear. No wonder, Proverbs 19:4 says:
“Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.” (ESV)
But wait! This also happened to Job when he got afflicted by Satan so that his wife advised him to ‘curse God and die’ (Job 2:7-10). Peter too, denied Jesus at the point of need despite an early warning (Mark 14:30-72). Therefore, have you depended on man and got disappointed or perhaps, you’re downcasted by your circumstance(s), lately? If yes! Don’t forget that man is limited (Psalms 60:11-12); and instead, call on God to intervene and bless you with good friends such as the ones who drilled the roof to ensure their friend’s healing (Mark 2:1-12).
WHAT NOW?
As our text reads, there’s only one friend who can never desert you even when your mother forsakes you (Isaiah 49:15-16). His name is Jesus! If you accept His friendship request, He would blot out your wretched past and errors (2 Corinthians 5:17), and be there to catch you when you stumble!
